Academic historian and author Dr. Bernard von Bothmer researches and instructs classes on U.S. history for two San Francisco Bay Area colleges. A graduate of Brown University, Stanford University, and Indiana University, Bernard von Bothmer focuses his classes on the history of U.S. politics, issues of historical memory, and specific periods in the American past, such as the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Progressive Era.

An Adjunct Professor with the University of San Francisco's College of Arts and Sciences, Bernard von Bothmer teaches for both the school's history and american studies departments. Additionally, Bernard von Bothmer serves as a Adjunct Professor at Dominican University of California, where he has taught such undergraduate and graduate courses as €œThe Civil War and Reconstruction; Bob Dylan: An American Troubadour and €œThe American Century: Issues in 20th Century America.

The recipient of the University of San Francisco's 2010 Distinguished Lecturer Award for Excellence in Teaching, Bernard von Bothmer balances his teaching career by writing articles and books on U.S. history. In the past, his work has been featured in both War, Literature & the Arts: An International Journal of the Humanities and Lincoln Lore, a journal published by the Lincoln Museum. In 2010, Bernard von Bothmer released his first book, Framing the Sixties: The Use and Abuse of a Decade from Ronald Reagan to George W. Bush.

Outside of the classroom, Bernard von Bothmer and his wife Jane serve as committed philanthropists in the San Francisco community. They operate their own nonprofit organization, the Bernard & Jane von Bothmer Foundation, through which they donate to local charities, museums, and educational institutions. Furthermore, Jane von Bothmer has served as the Executive Director of the eWish Foundation, sits on the Board of Directors of the Hamilton Family Center, and supports a number of regional institutions, including The Hamlin School and the Bay Area Discovery Museum.
